May 2010 E-letter

I consented to giving Dr J a break this month and will be responsible for this month's e letter.
May is the month of spring flowers, warmer weather and one day that should not be forgotten....Mother's Day!

The role of Mother is demonstrated in so many ways that I think this is the month to celebrate all that women give and do. (However, I also include some of our male patients). If you are not raising children or caring for grandchildren then you are "mothering" in some other unique way. Do you have siblings or parents or a spouse you are caring for? Maybe when you are at work you are needed to "take care" of a boss, your students, patients, a co-worker, neighbors, other relatives, in-laws, or a friend. Most of us in many ways are in charge of being "Mothers" or caregivers for someone. And you probably have no idea how much you are appreciated. We have patients in this practice that fit each and every one of the roles I just listed. I want to tell you how much you are admired and respected. THANK YOU for all you give.

Now let's also take this month to try and focus some on how best to take care of ourselves. Because this is coming from a medical office I first think about reminding and encouraging all of you to do the preventative things to help keep you healthier. Have your wellness physicals, labs, mammograms, colonoscopies, and any other procedures recommended, on a timely basis. This will help catch some problems early when it is easier to correct or control. If you need medications, take them. Some meds may be recommended for comfort but most are to contribute to maintaining good health. Beyond that I hope you will give yourself some time (even if just a few minutes) each day for some exercise and relaxation. Get involved in a hobby you enjoy. Read a good book, play at gardening or talk to a friend - someone who makes you laugh. Work at improving your diet. If you weigh more than you should, try everyday to give up a few "fat or sugar" calories. If you need to gain some weight, work at adding some healthy calories each day. If you smoke, try again to quit or cut back. In other words, try to "Mother" yourself on a daily basis. I wish you all a good month and......

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY
