August E-Letter
It's August and the temps have hit the 90's mark, must be back to school time. Too soon for students and just in time for parents.
We have been providing school and sports participation evaluations - some observations and comments -
The number of required and recommended immunizations has expanded over the past 3 years. Due to their high expense and special storage requirements, we have been asking our patients to utilize the local health departments for their immunization series.
The sports participation exam emphasizes cardiovascular screening. A family history of sudden death or symptoms that suggest possible structural heart disease, requires a thorough cardiac work up before participation is undertaken.
During a high school physical, a student shared his concern about the almost daily occurrences of violence, intimidation and harassment. We should be asking our students about their sense of personal safety and fears they may experience. It's tough to focus on learning in an environment of violence and fear.
Practice News:
1. We have been added to the United Health Care - River Valley network.
2. Larger employers, hospitals and insurance companies constantly change their "relationships". As a result, patients are compelled to change their physicians (Latest example is Methodist and Health Alliance) to remain "in network". I am realizing a major advantage of being an independent (not employed by a hospital physician group) physician. Network participation is my choice and is not at the whim of corporate health care interests.
500 - That is the number of enrolled patients we have reached upon completing our 7th month of practice. When we introduce the practice to new patients, the "we know you and you know us" model of practice seems to be what many people are seeking.
Marilyn and I thank you for your support..
